Homilies & Reflections

One thing I ask of the Lord. This I long to dwell in the house of the Lord,
all the days of my life.

2026-02-11 - The One greater than Solomon is here. Author: Fr. Camillus Nwaigwe

In the First Reading, we heard of a powerful and wealthy woman, the Queen of Sheba who heard of the wisdom of Solomon and refused to rely on rumours. She made a long, expensive, uncomfortable journey just to see for herself. She asked difficult questions. She observed carefully. And when she encountered Solomon, she noted that the report was not just true, it surpassed what was told her.

But here is the deeper point: Solomon was only a shadow. Christ is the reality. Today, the One greater than Solomon is here. We heard Him in the Gospel today go deeper than Solomon ever could by explaining what defiles a man.
While Solomon had Wisdom which he received from God, Jesus is the Wisdom of God.

Friends, the Queen of Sheba travelled miles to sit before Solomon. We do not need to travel far, Christ comes to us. He comes to us in His Word proclaimed at Mass, in the Eucharist on this altar, in prayer, in the poor and suffering.
Yet sometimes we treat what is near with less value than what is far.
The Queen crossed deserts for wisdom, we sometimes struggle to cross the street to attend Mass.
The One greater than Solomon is here but do we recognize Him?

Again, there is this danger that comes with familiarity. The Queen of Sheba was amazed because everything was new to her. We risk losing our sense of awe because Christ is familiar to us. We hear the Gospel daily. We receive Holy Communion often, we see the crucifix everywhere. But familiarity must not become indifference. If a foreign queen could be overwhelmed by a human king's wisdom,
how much more should we be overwhelmed by the Son of God?

The Queen of Sheba came seeking answers. Let us come to Christ seeking conversion.

God bless you
