One of the greatest spiritual dangers in life is not always suffering; sometimes, it is comfort. When everything is going badly, we naturally run to God. But when everything begins to work, money comes, business succeeds, health is good, people praise us, our plans are working, we can gradually begin to live as though we no longer need God.
This is the warning behind today's Gospel. Jesus says, "Woe to you who are rich… woe to you who are filled now… woe to you who laugh now… woe to you when all speak well of you." Jesus is not saying that being rich, happy, or respected is a sin. Rather, He warns against allowing these things to become our security, identity and ultimate satisfaction. There is a danger in having everything and forgetting the One who gave us everything.
Paul makes the same point in the first reading: “The form of this world is passing away.” Everything we possess is temporary. Money can disappear. Position can change. Popularity can fade. Beauty fades. Even the people who praise us today may criticize us tomorrow.
Therefore, do not build your life on what cannot last. Sometimes, when things are going well, we stop praying as much. We become less dependent on God. We begin to think, "I have made it." But Christianity teaches us that even our success is grace. The fact that things are working does not mean we have outgrown our need for God.
In fact, prosperity should make us more grateful, more generous and more responsible, not more self-sufficient.
The real question is therefore not, "Am I doing well?" The deeper question is, "What is happening to my soul while I am doing well?" Is my success making me proud or grateful? Is my wealth making me generous or selfish? Is my position making me serve or dominate? Is people's praise drawing me closer to God or making me addicted to approval?
The greatest blessing is not to have everything going well. The greatest blessing is to remain faithful to God whether things are going well or badly. So, when life is good, thank God. When you have enough, remember those who have little. When people praise you, remain humble. When you succeed, remember that you are a steward, not the owner of everything.
Be careful when everything is going well, not because success is bad, but because comfort can quietly make us forget God.
