One of the greatest mistakes people make is to judge everything by its beginning. We admire what is already big, successful, and influential, but we often ignore what is small, ordinary, and hidden. Yet the readings of today reminds us that God delights in working through small beginnings to accomplish great things.
 
In the *Gospel*, Jesus compares the Kingdom of God to a mustard seed. Though it is one of the smallest seeds, it grows into a large shrub where birds find shelter. He also compares it to yeast, a tiny ingredient that silently leavens an entire batch of dough. The lesson is clear: God's greatest works often begin in ways that seem insignificant. What appears small today can become a source of blessing for many tomorrow.
 
The *First Reading* offers another perspective. God tells Jeremiah to wear a linen loincloth close to his waist. As long as it remained close to Jeremiah, it was useful and beautiful. But after it was buried far away, it became ruined and worthless. The contrast is striking. Small beginnings become great endings only when we remain close to God. Separation from Him leads not to growth but to decay.
 
This message is especially important in a world that celebrates instant success. We want quick promotions, immediate answers to prayers, rapid spiritual growth, and overnight achievements. But God usually works differently. He forms saints through daily fidelity, not dramatic moments. He builds strong families through countless small sacrifices. He strengthens faith through ordinary acts of prayer, charity, and perseverance.
 
Think of the apostles. They were a small group of ordinary fishermen from an insignificant region of the world. No one imagined that their preaching would transform history. Every mighty oak was once a tiny acorn. Every cathedral began with a single stone. Every saint began with one decision to follow Christ.
 
The same is true for us. A small act of forgiveness may restore an entire family. A few minutes of daily Scripture reading can gradually transform a person's heart. Never despise small acts of goodness because God often hides great miracles within them.
 
Therefore, if your efforts seem unnoticed, your ministry appears small, your business is just beginning, or your spiritual progress feels slow, do not lose heart. Remain faithful. The mustard seed does not become a tree overnight, and the yeast works silently before anyone notices its effect. God's work is often hidden before it becomes visible.
 
Today, Jesus invites us to trust the process of grace. Do not measure your life by how small your beginning is. Measure it by how faithfully you remain with God. For when God is at work, small beginnings can indeed have great endings.

From The Chancery   Dear Brothers, happy weekend! You would recall that during the last Bishop's/Priests' Meeting, the Bishop directed that the entire diocese of Umuahia should be observing a one week prayer for *Peace* in Igbo land. I am happy to inform you that, following the directive of His Lordship, the seven days prayers will begin on the 9th of August, and end on the solemnity of Our Lady's Assumption (15th of August), 2026. Take note of the following, please: 1) Take time to explain to your parishioners about the importance of the one week of prayers. 2) Draw their attention to the fact that this is directed by the Bishop himself. 3) Remember that it is a daily evening program. 4) The color to wear is black. 5) The day begins with Rosary procession and concludes with holy Mass. 6) All are advised to make sacrifices during those days.   Do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions regarding the program. logoThe Diocese of Umuahia was erected on June 23, 1958 with Most Rev. Anthony Gogo Nwaedo C.S.Sp. as its first Bishop and Most Rev Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji as the second Bishop. The diocese was carved out from the then Diocese of Owerri. Since its inception, two other dioceses: Okigwe (1981) and Aba (1990) have been excised from it. Its present area of about 2,460.40km2 spans six Local Government Areas: Umuahia North, Umuahia South, Ikwuano, Bende, Ohafia and Arochukwu.
